Chocolate Chip Cookie

Ingredients

  • butter, softened (1 cup)
  • light brown sugar (1 cup)
  • white sugar (1/2 cup)
  • large eggs (2)
  • double-fold vanilla extract (1 tablespoon)
  • all-purpose flour (2 1/3 cups)
  • baking soda (1 teaspoon)
  • salt (1 teaspoon)
  • milk chocolate chips (1 cup)
  • semisweet chocolate chips (1 cup)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Beat softened butter and sugar together in a large bowl until soft and fluffy. [Cream the sugar and butter*]
  3. Mix in eggs and vanilla extract until soft, fluffy texture returns.
  4. Beat in flour, baking soda, and salt until fully incorporated. Stir in chocolate chips.
  5. Roll dough into small balls; place on the prepared baking sheet.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, about 10 minutes. Cool cookies on the baking sheet, about 5 minutes.

Cook's Note

* Creamed butter results in a lighter and firmer cookie than melted butter does when mixed with sugar.

There’s a bit of a debate in the Affleck family: softened butter or browned butter? Most prefer the classic version made with softened butter, but swapping in browned butter results in a richer, denser cookie. Just be sure to let the browned butter cool before mixing it with the sugar and eggs, or you’ll risk scrambling them.
